How Microneedling Can Change Your Skin for the Better

For individuals with hyperpigmentation, acne scars, or wrinkles, obtaining perfect skin can feel like a tall task – and sometimes it can be! Thankfully, through technology and our ability to deep dive into our own physiology, we’ve been able to develop techniques like microneedling that help us improve the look and texture of our skin on a deeper level. Let’s talk about all you need to know about microneedling and what it can do for your skin.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin care treatment that gives you fantastic results. The process works by introducing microscopic, sterile needles into the epidermis using a microneedling pen. These needles create microscopic punctures, creating what’s called “micro injuries'' to the skin – cue the magic!

Microneedling's purpose is to generate collagen production to smooth, tone and even skin texture

what is microneedling

While the idea of intentionally causing micro injuries to the skin on your face may sound a little counterproductive, the truth is the process is highly beneficial. You see, with the microneedling process, there is no scarring or permanent damage that occurs; Instead, the tiny pricks send a signal to your brain, stimulating the production of collagen in order to repair the “damaged” skin.

Microneedling triggers inflammation to set off your body’s self healing response

As the needles are gently stamped into the skin, the body immediately starts the healing process. Inflammation occurs as a way to start the collagen production to the skin. Additionally, nutrient rich blood is brought to the surface, delivering oxygen and fundamental nutrients to expedite the healing process.

What type of benefits can you expect from microneedling

If you’ve found this method of treating skin issues intriguing and are contemplating moving forward, we’re happy to hear that! Below is a list of the most common correctional benefits that microneedling has in store for your skin's needs.

Microneedling can treat most depressions in the skin, like acne scarring and enlarged pores

Skin concerns, especially visible ones such as acne scars, can really impact self esteem. Fortunately, with the collagen production from microneedling and by breaking down scar tissue, microneedling allows your skin to diminish the appearance of these depressions over a period of repeated treatments.

If you are navigating hyperpigmentation or melasma, microneedling can help you, too!

Changes in pigment and discoloration can also impact how you feel about your skin. During the resurfacing process, new, healthy skin is brought to the surface. The appearance of your newer skin cells reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation and melasma. Our goal is not only to address your skin concerns, but boost your confidence and self-love!

This procedure can help deeper, more narrow scars, but benefits from an add on service

For those with deeper, narrow acne scars called “ice-pick scars”, a little more TLC may be needed in order to reduce the appearance. We recommend combining your treatment with customizable skin care products to get the best results possible. Microneedling helps add-on treatments and ingredients penetrate deeper into the skin, elevating their effectiveness such as chemical peels.

Other things to take into consideration about microneedling

Microneedling can truly help those who are struggling with the look and feel of their skin, but before committing, there are some important things we think you should know.

Are there any risks or side effects to microneedling that you should know about?

If you’re worried about side effects, we have great news for you. This treatment comes with very little downtime as the only result of treatment is red, swollen skin that dies down after a few hours. Additionally, some dryness or flaking may occur. If you feel like you may have some underlying conditions that may affect the treatment, speak with your esthetician during consultation to discuss your possible contraindications.

How to prepare for your microneedling appointment

When preparing, simply ensure that you come to your appointment with clean skin, free of makeup . Avoid using retinol products and other topical medication for at least three days prior to your appointment. Additionally, avoid excessive sun exposure and do not exfoliate for at least three days prior to your microneedling appointment. Your esthetician will provide a topical numbing cream for a comfortable treatment..

What to be mindful of after your microneedling session

Following your session, just be sure to avoid touching your face and limit sunlight exposure. Maintain your practice of avoiding medicated facial creams as well as products that contain retinol. Be gentle with your skin as it resurfaces, making sure to stay hydrated both inside and out!
